The main goal of this course is to introduce students to the basic concepts of linguistic pragmatics. Pragmatics is an area of linguistics which studies how language is used to convey meaning in a variety of communicative situations. At the end of this course, students will have a better understanding of how people use expressions in order to communicate with each other in different ways.
授業概要
This course will give an overview of key concepts in pragmatics. It will introduce students to examples of pragmatic meaning at the sentence level (entailment and presupposition), pragmatic meaning in conversation (the cooperative principle, speech acts, politeness), and pragmatics in society (language and gender). Students will learn basic concepts, participate in online discussions on topics relating to pragmatics in everyday society, and prepare academic summaries of research in pragmatics. Through this course, students will further develop their skills in academic reading and writing.
