This course is centered on the close reading and analysis of Jane Austen's Persuasion and other works. Students are expected to understand the novel in its cultural and historical contexts and, at the same time, relate themselves to the novel. Particular attention will be paid to the relationship between characters and their surroundings.
授業概要
We will first discuss some characteristics of Jane Austen as an author of "the novel of manners" and then examine how these characteristics are expressed or contradicted in Persuasion, her last novel, indicating a new turning Austen seems to have taken. Comparison with her earlier epistolary novel, Lady Susan, and her unifinished last novel, Sanditon, will also be considered.
